The Inspiration
Educational environments must continually evolve, supporting leadership, collaboration, and high-quality teaching within spaces that were often never designed for such flexible use. For colleges, this evolution must happen without disrupting academic programmes, placing a premium on safety, certainty, and speed of delivery.
At Wolves College, the ambition was to transform a former dance studio into a professional executive suite, presentation room and multi-function teaching space. The programme demanded a complete change in use and character, delivered within a highly compressed timeframe. The challenge was not only to move quickly, but to deliver a refined, high-quality environment that supported leadership, presentation, and learning, without compromise on safety, usability, or finish.
Our Approach
Our approach combined early-stage feasibility, clear project definition, and disciplined delivery planning. Before any design or construction activity commenced, we undertook a focused feasibility assessment to evaluate how the existing space could be most effectively repurposed, testing layout options, adjacencies, technical constraints, and operational needs. This early appraisal ensured the chosen solution, an executive suite with built in presentation space which could be used as a multi-function teaching space, was the most appropriate, valuable, and efficient use of the space.
Following feasibility confirmation, we established a robust scope of works to define objectives, timelines, and deliverables, providing the client with clarity and confidence from the outset. A fully coordinated planning workflow was developed to ensure transparent communication, clear sequencing, and efficient decision-making throughout the project lifecycle. PRINCE2-inspired project management principles underpinned delivery, enabling structured progress tracking and rapid resolution of issues as they arose.
Health, safety, and risk management were embedded throughout. A comprehensive risk framework governed all activities from planning through to completion, supported by regular site inspections and safety checks. This ensured all works were delivered safely within a live college environment, with no incidents and no disruption to wider campus operations.
The refurbishment works delivered a complete transformation of the space through carefully coordinated strip-out and reconfiguration. This included the installation of acoustic partitioning to support privacy and presentation use, blackout glazing and reinstated blinds to provide flexibility of use, and new suspended ceilings, finishes, skirtings, and compliant fire door hardware to create a refined, professional environment. A modern kitchenette was fully integrated to support executive meetings and events, while comprehensive upgrades to plumbing, electrical, and data infrastructure ensured the space was fully equipped for contemporary presentation and teaching requirements. Certified fire-stopping and passive fire protection measures were incorporated throughout, ensuring the refurbished accommodation met the highest standards of safety, durability, and regulatory compliance within a live college environment.
The Outcome
The project delivered a fully transformed executive suite with integrated presentation and multi-function teaching space, finished to a high standard and ready for immediate use. Informed by early-stage feasibility and careful option appraisal, the final configuration maximised the value and functionality of the former dance studio while meeting the College’s operational and governance needs. Despite the complexity of the transformation, the entire programme, from planning through construction, commissioning, and handover, was completed within a two-week window, meeting the College’s time-critical requirements in full.
